Inception is a 2010 Hollywood science fiction action film written, co-produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious, and is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment. The movie was largely inspired by Tibetan Buddhism beliefs of dream cycles and lucid dreaming. It grossed over $825 million in box office revenue and won four Academy Awards: Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. To date it is the most expensive R-rated film ever made. It also holds the Guinness World Record for "Most Successful Film at the Worldwide Box Office. A critically acclaimed blockbuster, it was deemed ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically significant’ by the US Library of Congress and was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry for being ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically significant’ in 2015; its box office success and director's accolades also qualify it for inclusion on the list. Since its release, various interpretations have been put forward regarding certain scenes in the movie. Some critics suggested that these scenes were inspired by Buddhist philosophy. The film opens with Dom Cobb, a professional thief, who specializes in "inception", the art of infiltrating the mind of his victim by way of dreaming. A member of an elite group that specializes in this field, he is approached by Arthur, an old acquaintance with an offer to eliminate all his criminal record and thus be able to start over for good. The catch is that it must be achieved without the benefit of sleep. Cobb agrees on the condition that he himself would get to choose his target's identity; Arthur agrees; they go to see Ariadne (Ellen Page), a crackerjack code breaker who shares Cobb's dream-sharing ability. She has broken into a high-security mansion for him, and is already hard at work making new dreams. Cobb will need to "incept" his team members one by one, creating their dream selves so that they can interact with Cobb's subconscious mind while he is dreaming. Cobb agrees to the job despite Arthur's warnings about the impossibilty of inception being perfect if it involves changing someone's inherent personality traits. When Ariadne tells him that her inception has been flawless, he immediately suspects that she has been working for other members of their team. He finds out from Arthur that the team member was actually Mal (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a fellow inceptionist who betrayed him. At a café, Cobb learns from a policeman's record of Arthur's own botched attempt at inception twenty years ago, which he ordered by proxy via email. Cobb finds Mal in a bar and confronts him about it while Mal is drunk. Mal admits his treachery and also reveals that he believes Ariadne is plotting against them. cfa1e77820
